synopsis
"pk2pk" is an expression from signal analysis meaning "peak to peak" as in the full swing of an analogue waveform.

This project came about with the arrival of an old tascam 22-4 quarter inch reel to reel recording deck. The concept was to create a set of minimal tech noire tracks using as a maximum 4 instruments. There were no computers involved which at the time was a humiliation but now is something to be proud of. The complement of instruments consisted of Roland CR-8000 and TR-606 drum machines both playing and executing timing triggers. The bass lines and lead lines were hand played on variously a Roland Jupiter 4, SH101, SH09, Sequential Circuits 6Trak, a PAIA Fatman and a Korg Poly-6. The tape stock was Ampex 456 which accounts for the beefy sound and the slight hiss heard throughout.

The song writing was designed to express minimalism through minor melodic and harmonic chord progressions with a high degree of repetition. The repetition is broken by timbral evolution of the various analogue synthesizers to drive the darkness of the simplicity to the front of the observers attention.

Frank Levin produced Alanis Morissette's first album but this one is far better.
